32bit x86 is not as important any more.
With -msse2 these days, GCC produces:
        movq    4(%esp), %xmm0
        psrlq   $4, %xmm0
        movd    %xmm0, %eax
        psrlq   $32, %xmm0
        movd    %xmm0, %edx

Which is faster anyways.
