I have worked out that the cause of the linker error message
/usr/bin/ld: cannot open crt1.o: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
was due to the fact that I had not installed the kernel-headers and
glibc-devel packages. This I have done via the corresponding RPMs available
with RedHat 6.1.
Are there any other fundamental packages that I need to install in order to
develop C and C++ programs using GCC?
Richard
