This error happens when somebody sends spam to the mailing list, and
your mail provider (gmail) rejects that spam.

Unless gmail continually rejects *all* mail the list sends you, you
won't get unsubscribed.

It means your email provider (specifically, the mail server for
mac.com) rejected an email from the gcc-help mailing list, because it
violated the mail server's policies (see the last line, which shows

It's not a threat. It's fairly normal for mailing lists to
auto-unsubscribe you if mail to you keeps bouncing. The difference is
most don't tell you in advance that there were delivery problems.

If your mail account was permanently disabled, say because you'd
deleted the account, should the mailing list keep sending mails to you
anyway, even though every one of them bounced back?

And the gcc mail server doesn't know why it was rejected. "Message
rejected due to local policy. Please visit
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204137" is not a machine readable
reason.

Yes, that's usually what happened. In this case, definitely.

If you follow the instructions in the mail to get an index you'll see
that 62761 is this mail:

I don't think it's gmail being down, it's gmail rejecting an email
with malware or other dangerous content. The bad email is sent to the
list and gcc.gnu.org forwards it to each list subscriber. If the
subscriber's server rejects it then gcc.gnu.org sends the subscriber a
notice that the mail was rejected. It looks like a problem at your
end, but actually gmail is doing you a favour.

Now I understand why I am always receiving these emails. Is it OK to

I've never seen one that informed me of a mail I actually wanted to
read, but I wouldn't say in general it's *always* safe to ignore them
all. Sometimes it could be a problem with your mail server. As a gmail
user, you can probably assume that bounces are due to gmail policies,
not due to their servers being down.

You can look at the bounce message to see the reason. For the recent
example it said this:

Remote host said: 552-5.7.0 This message was blocked because its
content presents a potential
552-5.7.0 security issue. Please visit
552-5.7.0  https://support.google.com/mail/?p=BlockedMessage to review our
552 5.7.0 message content and attachment content guidelines.

That seems pretty clear it was intentionally rejected by gmail, and so
if you trust google to filter your mail, you can ignore it.

If you want to know what you missed you can send an email to
gcc-index@gcc.gnu.org and look for the message ID given in the bounce
notification. If the subject line looks like spam, ignore it. But I
don't bother doing that.

I get 500-1000 messages a day, and have had no other complaints of bounces,
furthermore I have been getting a steady stream of messages from gnu.org,
so that's very odd.

This - and a few like it before - was sent to me. The problem is that it
uses the wrong IP number for my domain which was moved to another host
about a month ago. It seems some cache at gnu.org has my old IP number and
isn't willing to update it.

If this is a problem in gnu setup, please solve it, I don't want to be

Sorry. I was configuring our sendmail mailer to accept relays for a
customer's domain and it took a couple of hours to get the relay
configurations correct.

There should not be a problem now.
