I just tried to compile ssh with gcc but, recieved the message that I'm sure you've all heard before...gcc can't create executables. This is because I don't have /usr/ccs/bin/as according to config.log. Now, I thought that I could obtain the assembler through binutils, so I downloaded it and needed to compile it, but, gcc can't create executables. Is there anything else I can do to get the assembler?

Install the development packages of the OS you've got, or download a
pre-compiled version of binutils, probably from the same site where
you got GCC.
