When the stack overflowed, I got a segmentation fault and
a subsequent core. As the stack has overflown, the core
file is useless to find the problem.

Write any small infinite recursion.

I don't know and from previous discussions I gather it's not 
a simple matter.
As a programmer I'd say that ideally I would like a StackOverflowException.
As a second best, I could live with some way way of inspecting
the core.
