This is a known issue. Defining a standard conforming value
for __cplusplus happens to break V3 owns implementation.
This issue will addressed later. Thanks for your report.

False alarm: it turns out that the system on which I was working has a
faulty disk and the source file which was causing the `problem' seems to
lie on one or more defective blocks and is itself unreadable. Sorry to
have wasted your time.

I ran into this problem as well.
class IEEEfloat
{
private:
static const int MIN_INT = 0x80000000;
static const int MAX_INT = 0x7FFFFFFF;
public:
int IntValue(void);
};
//const int IEEEfloat::MIN_INT;
//const int IEEEfloat::MAX_INT;
int IEEEfloat::IntValue()
{
int i = 0;
return i ? MIN_INT : MAX_INT;
}
int main() {}
Produces:
% g++ -o run const_mem.cpp
/tmp/ccCPWycH.o: In function `IEEEfloat::IntValue() ':
/tmp/ccCPWycH.o(.text+0x14): undefined reference to
`IEEEfloat::MAX_INT '
/tmp/ccCPWycH.o(.text+0x21): undefined reference to
`IEEEfloat::MIN_INT '
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
This is with gcc 3.0, from Feb 14, 2001.
Uncommenting the external defs "fixes" the problem.
