 It appears that recent CVS updates of gcc pre-3.0 changed the
 defaults so that a wchar_t specialization of std::numeric_limits<>
 are now actually turned on by default.
 
 Sorry for bothering you, please close the issue.

     I can't reproduce your results:
     
     %./a.out 
     1
     
     ..which is what I expect. There was some movement on this code, so you'll want to make sure that you've reconfigured/rebuilt in the last couple of weeks.
     
     
     You'll need to make sure that include/bits/c++config.h has wchar_t bits enabled.
     
     %grep WCHAR_T c++config.h 
     #define _GLIBCPP_USE_WCHAR_T 1
