The expression "c = buffer[i + 1 - j]", where i and j are 32-bit unsigned ints, results in code that evalutes like so:

t0 = (i - j)
t0 = t0 & 0xFFFFFFFF
t1 = buffer + t0  // whoa, t0 just got promoted to 64-bit
t2 = load_address(t1 + 1)  // lda t2, 1(t1) on the Alpha
c = *t2

For the case where j==(i+1), the subscript should always evaluate to 0, regardless of the order of evaluation. With the order shown above, you end up with a 64-bit subscript of [0xFFFFFFFF+1]. For some reason it wants to add the 1 using a "load address" instruction with an offset.

I could only reproduce this behaviour with the C++ compiler. When the same code was compiled with the C compiler, everything was ok. I've attached a demonstration C++ program and the assembler output I get on my Alpha system. The problem is in line 14.
