 Actually, I was able to resolve the problem.  I filed a
 bug report on the gdb debugger.  Someone responded to that
 bug report and told me to update to version 2.12 of GNU ld.
 Using the newer version of the loader resolved the problem.

    This actually is either a g++ bug, a gdb bug, or a combination of the both of them. What I suggest you do is try to make a smaller test case: having people download code (even free code) to reproduce this bug is pretty much a non-starter. You'll need a completely self-contained testcase to start with.
    
    In general, C++ debugging is pretty weak. This is a known issue, unfortunately.
