    I cannot compile your testcase with gcc 3.0.3, nor
    with gcc 3.1 20011207.
    
    I get the following error:
    a.c: In function `main':
    a.c:1: `i' undeclared (first use in this function)
    a.c:1: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
    a.c:1: for each function it appears in.)
    
    
    Do you still encounter your problem with a newer gcc snapshot?
