I cannot reproduce this with gcc >= 3.1 on x86/linux. Can you try this code with gcc-3.1 and see if it is still an issue? If there's no response within a week, this bug report will be closed.

This code works in GCC 3.1, I have reinstalled GCC 3.0.4 and have been
unable to reproduce the bug. Thanks for the response. Gnat 6450 may be
closed.

On i686-pc-linux-gnu cannot reproduce neither with 3.0.4 nor
with 3.1, it seems target specific.
