Synopsis: miscompilation of x86 inline assembly

State-Changed-From-To: open->closed
State-Changed-By: hubicka
State-Changed-When: Thu Oct 10 11:41:42 2002
State-Changed-Why:
    It is not possible to change stack in ASM statement block and expect operands to be corrected.
    All operands are valid only before the first ASM instruction

>Organization:

>Description:
When using local variables as memory operands to inline assembly blocks and changing the stack pointer inside this block of assembly code, the assembler assumes the stack pointer to be a fixed value and the wrong local variables are used. This is caused by not using the stack frame pointer (ebp) for local variables, but the stack pointer (esp).

This results in the wrong assembler output and segmentation faults in some applications (like 'Noatun', KDE Media Player). The inline assembler assumes that the stack pointer is fixed, which results in the wrong variables to be used.

The attached file demonstrates this problem. The output for test1() and test2() should be equal, but it's not.
>How-To-Repeat:
gcc -O2 gcc32bug.c

// output of test1() and test2() is different (run a.out)
>Fix:
These functions should force the use of the stack frame pointer to fix this problem (IMHO).
