Synopsis: Cannot make gcc on SPARC-III/Solaris 8 as MULTIDIR fails
State-Changed-From-To: open->closed
State-Changed-By: davem
State-Changed-When: Thu Dec 12 21:20:21 2002
State-Changed-Why:
Well, you say you read the install documentation, but aparently you missed the bit in the Solaris specific
section that says you need to specify --disable-multilib
on the configure command line if you are not building
with 64-bit libraries and tools available.

Sun Microsystems SunBlade 1000, Solaris 8. I am compiling
gcc 3.1 from gcc version 2.95.3

I downloaded the source, gunziped,
configure --prefix=/site/apps/CLUE/gcc
make
When the program gets to the ./sparc-sun-solaris2.8/sparcv9
part of the tree none of the Makefiles are there. It also
does not find install-sh in ./.. ./../.. because it is in
./../../.. I have tried copying Makefiles and fixing paths
but this is pretty much beyond me (BTW, I did check the
INSTALL, BUGS, ChangeLog and all that and don't see anything
that rings a bell) I am using GNU make 3.79.1, autoconf 2.54,
automake 1.72 so my tools are reasonably up to date.
>How-To-Repeat:
I guess configure and make on a SunBlade 1000 / Solaris 8.
>Fix:
I can do a reasonable amount of configure and make, but
this is way out of my league. I can see where it does:
Running configure in multilib subdirs sparcv9
pwd: /site/apps/CLUE/gcc-source/gcc-3.1/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/libstdc++-v3
Running configure in multilib subdir sparcv9
pwd: /site/apps/CLUE/gcc-source/gcc-3.1/sparc-sun-solaris2.8
mkdir sparcv9
Building symlink tree in /site/apps/CLUE/gcc-source/gcc-3.1/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/sparcv9/libstdc++-v3

configure: error: can not find install-sh or install.sh in . ./.. ./../..
make: *** [configure-target-libstdc++-v3] Error 1
but as far as I can see it does not do a configure on the
linked sparcv9 tree. I have copied and modified analogus
Makefiles from the non-sparcv9 parts of the tree but I
don't know enough to get that right, and the build should
do it anyway.
