 Wow, what a sequence of problems in one little testcase.
 
 Regarding the question of checking in my compiler: It's standard mainline, 
 so yes, with checking. Unfortunately, the original code does not compile 
 cleanly to the point of the ICE any more -- there are tons of errors about 
 the use of numeric_limit, which are caused by a patch by Mark this week, 
 AFAICT. So I can't really reproduce the tree checking failure any more...
