    I believe that this may have been a local environment problem.  Any problems in this area have clearly been killed since all active branches of the FSF tree are now built nightly in multiple configurations on multiple OS versions and CPU archs of FreeBSD...

    This is a rather old bootstrap failure. Can you please check
    whether this still happens with newer versions of gcc and
    report back to us what you find?
    
    From the symptoms you report, I would guess that your
    CVS download got scrambled up somehow. Could this have
    been the reason for the failure?
