This is a regression at least from Redhat's gcc 2.96 on alpha.

When trying to link the step-1 example from Deal II CVS
(http://www.dealii.org), there is the following link error:

    I'm fairly sure this shouldn't be considered a gcc bug at all,
    but rather a binutils bug.  Yes, there are things that the
    compiler could do to make things better, but I'd consider
    that an optimization rather than necessary for correctness.
    
    Attached a minimal test case.
