Everything works well on my i686-pc-linux-gnu platform:
paolo:~> g++ 10388.cc
paolo:~> a.out
Type a double:1e3
This was: 1000
I suspect an issue with your glibc: anything older than
2.2.5 is known to lead to troubles, sooner or later.
Which behaviour are you seeing?
