 ugh, that was a nasty bug you found! Good news is that while I can  
 reproduce it on gcc 3.2, and 3.3 branch, on latest mainline (20030513),  
 the code compiles successfully (ie doesn't sit there indefinitely). So  
 the problem is fixed in mainline.

The attached file is a port of some code which compiled without problems under Borland C++Builder and Microsoft Visual C++ (latest versions).  With "gcc -O2" it fails to compile because the CPU resources are exhausted.

In some cases, the GCC process seems to be stuck in an infinite loop.  On Cygwin, GCC exhausts the Windows virtual memory and terminates with this error message:

cc1plus: Cannot allocate 371887020 bytes after allocating 395993088 bytes

I have verified this problem with several versions:

gcc 2.95 (Linux) - hangs
gcc 3.2.1 (Cygwin) - out of memory
gcc 3.2.3 (Cygwin) - out of memory
gcc 3.2.3 (Linux) - hangs
gcc 3.3 prerelease (Cygwin) - hangs
