FYI - I am about to apply the following changes to master, now
that the 7.12 branch has been cut.

    [release/HEAD 1/2] Bump version to 7.12.50.DATE-git.
    [release/HEAD 2/2] Update NEWS post GDB 7.12 branch creation.

Now that the GDB 7.12 branch has been created, we can
bump the version number.
