We can't tell what was going on without more info.  Scheduler-locking does
works nowadays on linux.

More than 7 years have passed, doesn't seem useful anymore to keep this open.

If this is still relevant to you, then please retry with a recent GDB and attach
a self-contained small example, and we will look at fixing it.

I still get 

(gdb) set scheduler-locking on
Target 'exec' cannot support this command.
