BTW, the test needs to be different than what Pedro suggested.
When you start GDB with an inferior, it sets the architecture correspondingly.
Then, when you call "catch syscall", GDB loads the syscall names from the XML
file related to the current architecture. Therefore, in this scenario, you
*will* see the correct syscall, even if the inferior is not of the same
architecture as your host.
What this means is that triggering the bug is a bit simpler, and you don't even
need an inferior for that (I discovered this while writing the testcase for the
patch). For example, on i386 the "open" syscall is 5, but on x86_64 the
"fstat" is 5. Therefore, to see the bug you can only do:
(gdb) set architecture i386
The target architecture is assumed to be i386
(gdb) catch syscall 5
Catchpoint 1 (syscall 'open' [5])
(gdb) set architecture i386:x86-64
The target architecture is assumed to be i386:x86-64
(gdb) catch syscall 5
Catchpoint 2 (syscall 'open' [5])
With my patch:
(gdb) set architecture i386
The target architecture is assumed to be i386
(gdb) catch syscall 5
Catchpoint 1 (syscall 'open' [5])

A related question is how to handle syscalls by name ("catch syscall open"):
#1 - when the user kills the program, and then starts another one, of a
different architecture, in the same inferior. E.g.,
- file prog64
- start
- catch syscall open
- kill
- file prog32
- run
#2 - similarly, when a 64-bit inferior execs a 32-bit inferior.
- file prog64
- start
- catch syscall open (2 on 64-bit)
- continue
- inferior execs prog32
- inferior now calls syscall 2, which is something else on i386.
These two cases may end up handled by the breakpoint_re_set machinery.
#3 - in the presence of multiple inferiors, each with its own arch.
- file prog64
- start
- add-inferior -exec prog32
- inferior 2
- start
- catch syscall open
- set schedule-multiple on
- c
- both inferiors call "open"
Here, I don't think we'll catch inferior 1's. syscall catchpoints is presently
inferior-specific; while I think it should end up with a location per inferior
instead, and "open" should be parsed in each inferior's/location's arch.

Partial fix for PR breakpoints/10737: Make syscall info be per-arch instead
of global
This patch intends to partially fix PR breakpoints/10737, which is
about making the syscall information (for the "catch syscall" command)
be per-arch, instead of global. This is not a full fix because of the
other issues pointed by Pedro here:

However, I consider it a good step towards the real fix. It will also
help me fix <https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=17402>.
What this patch does, basically, is move the "syscalls_info"
struct to gdbarch. Currently, the syscall information is stored in a
global variable inside gdb/xml-syscall.c, which means that there is no
easy way to correlate this info with the current target or
architecture being used, for example. This causes strange behaviors,
because the syscall info is not re-read when the arch changes. For
example, if you put a syscall catchpoint in syscall 5 on i386 (syscall
open), and then load a x86_64 program on GDB and put the same syscall
5 there (fstat on x86_64), you will still see that GDB tells you that
it is catching "open", even though it is not. With this patch, GDB
correctly says that it will be catching fstat syscalls.
