Summary: build failure when using non-GNU awk
Product: gdb
Version: 7.2
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: build
AssignedTo: unassigned@sourceware.org
ReportedBy: bruno@clisp.org
Building gdb-7.2 on OSF/1 5.1. When 'gawk' is not found in PATH,
I see this build error:
$ ./configure
$ gmake
...
rm -f xml-builtin.tmp
AWK="nawk" \
/bin/ksh ./features/feature_to_c.sh \
xml-builtin.tmp ./features/gdb-target.dtd ./features/xinclude.dtd
./features/library-list.dtd ./features/osdata.dtd ./features/threads.dtd

xml-builtin.c:2: error: expected expression before 'static'
gmake[2]: *** [xml-builtin.o] Error 1
The script in gdb/features/feature_to_c.sh works neither with 'awk'
nor with 'nawk'. I had to install 'gawk' to get it working.

I tried this with:
prentzel. rpm -q mawk
mawk-1.3.4-22.20200120.fc34.x86_64
prentzel. rpm -q nawk
nawk-20180827-5.fc34.x86_64
.. and both of these worked fine for me.
I don't know the awk language well. OSF/1 5.1 is pretty old, I think,
so I tend to think that either requiring gawk is fine, or otherwise
someone with access to such a system will have to rewrite this script.

BTW if this bug is no longer relevant to you -- I see now it's been
>10 years -- then we can simply close it.

Yes, OSF/1 5.1 'awk' is no longer relevant, and a web search does not indicate
that any other 'awk' implementation has the same problem.
