Following a fork or vfork on IA64 HPUX is broken, triggering: 

20^error,msg="ttrace: Protocol error."

followed by some:

&"warning: Failed to read register value for cfm.\n"
&"warning: Failed to read register value for bspstore.\n"
&"warning: Failed to read register value for b0.\n"
&"warning: Failed to read register value for pfs.\n"

Roberto, not many active gdb people have HPUX access these days.  You may need
to debug this yourself.
