actually, this was caused by make clean not removing old arm files when I
changed architecture.

The error message complains about xml-builtin.o.
But I don't see how that is really possible if you ran make clean,
since the clean rule does:

    rm -f *.o *.a $(ADD_FILES) *~ init.c-tmp init.l-tmp version.c-tmp

Really you wanted "distclean" though.

Can you try to reproduce it again?  Perhaps posting an "ls -lR" after
the clean step?
Then maybe we can see what went wrong.
