I didn't try this, but in the long run I think we should remove
target sync altogether. What is the reason you use it?

I'm the current maintainer of insight that embeds gdb. Some years ago, insight
did not work with target asynchronous mode and thus was forcing target sync at
startup. This situation remained until the january problem: I then tested async
mode again and it was finally working. Insight now starts in target async mode
successfully and I no longer use target sync mode.

I'm OK for a true removal, if not mending target sync mode.
