Proposed patch (Simon)

Here's what I have to propose based on my previous comment.  This is the
narrowest scope where I managed to put the switch_to_thread that didn't require
a massive refactor.  I think that can be removed once the memory
reading/writing code (well, everything that uses xfer_partial) doesn't rely on
the global context.  Regarding this, I'd like to get back to this patch
eventually:
