That was never the goal.  Go back and read the archives again.

The idea was to make the "standard" sequence of

    ./configure
    make                (which actually did "make bootstrap")
    make install

work.  Nothing else.  Anything else would only be performed by maintainers
or other experienced users, and they could be relied upon to know the
"correct" procedure.
