Now that 5.0 is out, isn't it time to make UI_OUT on by default?
This would be a first step in getting rid of the old code (and all
those ifdefs).

Almost,
Should probably first have a a bit if a discussion on its merits. While
the code has been sitting in the trunk for some time I'm pretty sure few
have looked at it.
Remember, it does mean a significant change in the way people output
results.
