Not too sure if this the correct lis for this question, but
I'll ask anyway.

I've just typed 'gcc -print-search-dirs' and was horrified to
see search paths as long as my arm. What environment variables determine gcc's
search paths?

Check the GCC web pages: http://gcc.gnu.org/ . I'd first check the FAQ
and if that fails, the mailing lists to see which one is best.
