            Bug ID: 28493
Summary: how long does nscd wait before retrying a dead
                    resolver
           Product: glibc
           Version: 2.31
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: nscd
Assignee: unassigned at sourceware dot org
Reporter: harald.dunkel at aixigo dot com
CC: drepper.fsp at gmail dot com
  Target Milestone: ---

Apparently this is missing in the documentation: How long does nscd wait,
before it tries an unresponsive resolver again? Can I configure this time? Is a
changed network configuration (e.g. a new VPN connection to the office) taken
into account?

Please excuse if I am too blind to see, but I couldn't find it in the man pages
(nscd(8), nscd.conf(5))

--- Comment #1 from Harri <harald.dunkel at aixigo dot com> ---
PS: Reason for this BR is that some colleagues are complaining about nscd in
their home office setup. AFAICS: Their Linux laptop tries to setup a connection
to a host in the office, DNS lookup fails because the VPN connection hasn't
been activated, they activate VPN and try again, but they still cannot connect
because DNS keeps failing, even though the DNS server in the office is in
/etc/resolv.conf now.

If they deactivate nscd then the second DNS lookup succeeds immediately.
