In progress.  Initial patch was posted at
http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-02/msg00364.html
and
http://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2012-02/msg00454.html
suggests an approach for revised changes for this issue.  Various preliminary
changes towards that (removing some inappropriate references to the GNU system)
have gone in so far.
