I tested it on GNU/Linux with gcc-2.96-98 (RedHat 7.2), and make check
reports only an error in eigen directory, as it has been noted in the
documentation. There were no errors reported after optimization was turned
off.

I downloaded the release candidate and get errors on the Hermitage
stuff.
I did the standard:
./configure
./make
./make check
The make check fails.
I'm running Redhat 7.3 with gcc 2.96 on a Pentium 4
I have the output of make check if someone wants to look at it.

I think someone was reporting this bug to the gcc developers (check
the gsl list archives for details).

Can you send the error for a clean "./configure ; make", thanks.

Thanks. I think this must be a bug in the gcc optimiser for sparc
(for that version of gcc). Recompiling those two test_rot*.o object
files with optimisation turned off allows the test to pass. I will
have to add that to the release notes.

Thanks, it looks like there are a few small numerical differences on
PowerPC, which is to be expected, so I'll adjust the test tolerances

Thanks. I think this must be a bug in the gcc optimiser for sparc
(for that version of gcc). Recompiling those two test_rot*.o object
files with optimisation turned off allows the test to pass. I will
have to add that to the release notes.

I think someone was reporting this bug to the gcc developers (check
the gsl list archives for details).

Can you send the error for a clean "./configure ; make", thanks.

I compiled and did a make check on this gsl-1.2 release candidate using
Redhat Linux 7.2 and gcc 2.96 without failure.

I tested it on GNU/Linux with gcc-2.96-98 (RedHat 7.2), and make check
reports only an error in eigen directory, as it has been noted in the
documentation. There were no errors reported after optimization was turned
off.
