    We don't/can't use tcl-8.3 or iwidgets3.3.0 with Insight-5.0.
    
    I think you are running into a configuration problem that arises when the build finds a previous tcl/tk installation and mistakenly pulls in that configury instead of the one in the build tree.
    
    You seem to have fixed your problem yourself, but I'll still advise moving to Insight-5.1 if you have not already done so. (If you have, is this still a problem?)

The Makefile in the itcl/iwidets3.3.0/unix/ directory produces an error 2 when attempting to run
/usr/src/bs/BUILD/tcltk-8.3.1/itcl3.1.0/itk/../configure/mkinstalldirs.

Was able to repair the make file by making the following change:

MKINSTALLDIRS= $(TOP_DIR)/../config/mkinstalldirs and the install worked fine after that.

Install Redhat linux on a machine it has not been installed on before.  

Unpack the INsight-5.0.tar.gz file.  

issue the following:
./configure
make
make install

the install will produce an error 2 as described above.
