From: Adhemerval Zanella @ 2021-08-23 21:57 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: libc-alpha; +Cc: Norbert Manthey, Guillaume Morin, Siddhesh Poyarekar

Linux currently supports two ways to use Huge Pages: either by using
specific flags directly with the syscall (MAP_HUGETLB for mmap(), or
SHM_HUGETLB for shmget()), or by using Transparent Huge Pages (THP)
where the kernel will try to move allocated anonymous pages to Huge
Pages blocks transparent to application.

Also, THP current support three different modes [1]: 'never', 'madvise',
and 'always'. The 'never' is self-explanatory and 'always' will enable
THP for all anonymous memory. However, 'madvise' is still the default
for some systems and for such cases THP will be only used if the memory
range is explicity advertise by the program through a
madvise(MADV_HUGEPAGE) call.

This patchset adds a two new tunables to improve malloc() support with
Huge Page, 'glibc.malloc.hugetlb' with the supported values:

  - '0': default value, do not enable any huge page usage.

  - '1': instruct the system allocator to issue a madvise(MADV_HUGEPAGE)
call after a mmap() one for sizes larger than the default huge page
size and on sbrk() calls to extend the program data segment.

  - '2': instruct the system allocator to round allocation to huge page
sizes along with the required flags (MAP_HUGETLB for Linux). If the
memory allocation fails, the default system page size is used instead.

  - positive value: same as '2' but to use a specific huge page size.
The value is checked against the supported one by the system.

The 'glibc.malloc.hugetlb=2' aims to replace the 'morecore' removed
callback from 2.34 for libhugetlbfs (where the library tries to leverage
the huge pages usage instead to provide a system allocator). By
implementing the support directly on the mmap() code patch there is
no need to try emulate the morecore()/sbrk() semantic which simplifies
the code and make memory shrink logic more straighforward.

Changes from previous version:

  - Only use one tunable, 'glibc.malloc.hugetlb'.
  - Disable madvise if THP is set to always.
  - Add support to arenas.

Linux Transparent Huge Pages (THP) current support three different
states: 'never', 'madvise', and 'always'. The 'never' is
self-explanatory and 'always' will enable THP for all anonymous
memory. However, 'madvise' is still the default for some system and
for such case THP will be only used if the memory range is explicity
advertise by the program through a madvise(MADV_HUGEPAGE) call.

To enable it a new tunable is provided, 'glibc.malloc.hugetlb',
where setting to a value diffent than 0 enables the madvise call.

This patch issues the madvise(MADV_HUGEPAGE) call after a successful
mmap() call at sysmalloc() with sizes larger than the default huge
page size. The madvise() call is disable is system does not support
THP or if it has the mode set to "never" and on Linux only support
one page size for THP, even if the architecture supports multiple
sizes.

To test is a new rule is added tests-malloc-hugetlb1, which run the
addes tests with the required GLIBC_TUNABLE setting.

Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu.

For the main arena, the sbrk() is used as default instead of mmap()
and the granularity used when increasing the program segment is the
default page size.

To increase effectiveness with Transparent Huge Page with madvise, the
large page size is use instead. This is enabled by setting the value
'1' to the new huge pages tunable 'glibc.malloc.hugetlb'.

Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu.

With the morecore hook gone, there is not easy way to provide a way to
force the system allocation to use huge pages directly without resorting
to transparent huge pages. Some users and programs do prefer to
use the huge pages directly instead of THP for multiple reasons:
no splitting, re-merging by the VM, no TLB shootdowns for running
processes, fast allocation from the reserve pool, no competition with
the rest of the processes unlike THP, no swapping all, etc.

This patch extends the 'glibc.malloc.hugetlb' tunable: the value
'2' means to use huge pages directly using the system default size,
while a positive value means and specific page size that is matched
against the ones supported by the system.

Currently only memory allocated on sysmalloc() is handled, the arenas
still uses the default system page size.

To test is a new rule is added tests-malloc-hugetlb2, which run the
addes tests with the required GLIBC_TUNABLE setting. On systems without
a reserved huge pages pool, is just stress the mmap(MAP_HUGETLB)
allocation failure. To improve test coverage it is required to create
a pool with some allocated pages.

Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu.

 * On Linux, a new tunable, glibc.malloc.hugetlb, can be used to

- It might improve performance with Transparent Huge Pages madvise mode
- depending of the workload.

From: Adhemerval Zanella @ 2021-08-23 21:57 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: libc-alpha; +Cc: Norbert Manthey, Guillaume Morin, Siddhesh Poyarekar

This patch adds support huge page support on arena allocation, enable
with tunable glibc.malloc.hugetlb=2. Currently it uses non
configurable value for the minimum (one defined huge page size) and
maximum (four time the defined huge page size) arena size.

The arena allocation with huge pages does not use MAP_NORESERVE. As
indicate by kernel internal documentation [1], the flag might trigger
a SIGBUS on soft page faults if at memory access there is no left
pages in the pool.

On systems without a reserved huge pages pool, is just stress the
mmap(MAP_HUGETLB) allocation failure. To improve test coverage it is
required to create a pool with some allocated pages.

Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu with no reserved pages, 10 reserved pages
(which trigger mmap(MAP_HUGETBL) failures) and with 256 reserved pages
(which does not trigger mmap(MAP_HUGETLB) failures).

Hi Adhemerval,

I gave this new version a try and I'm still hitting the
malloc/tst-free-errno* test failures on ppc64le as before [1][2]. I
tried to debug it but I failed to find the root cause so far.

I could not reproduce it on x86_64 either, only ppc64le. Please let me
know if there's any test I can run to help.

I need to send an updated version of the 5/5. But is it the same failure
as before? Unfortunately the powerpc machines I have access don't have
any large page configured, and I couldn't reproduced this issue on
aarch64 as well.

For malloc/tst-free-errno*, yes. The others were fixed in the new

More info:

I noticed that big_size used in tst-free-errno.c (0x1000000) happens to
match exactly the hugepage size of the system I was testing the patches
on (16 MB).

The tests pass when running on another POWER9 that uses 2 MB hugepages.

I think I know what might be happening here: the test mmap an region
overlapping the allocated memory by mmap at line 92. To avoid trashing
any malloc metadata it also backup and copy back the first page which
contains the malloc metadata. The problem is depending of the page
size used on the malloc() call, the backup used by the test might not
be suffice: the metadata might be further than the
[ptr_align, ptr_aligned + pagesize].

And since we might not know which page size is used on malloc (since
it might depend of available pages on system global poll at the
moment of the mmap reserve), this is no easy way to find which page
size to use to backup.

I think it would be better to just filter out this test for
malloc-tests-hugetlb2.

That seems to match what I observed while debugging. getpagesize()
returns 64K, but since malloc is using hugepages, the actual page size
used in the allocation is 16 MB in this case, so the backup does not
actually preserve the entire pages.
