Could we please have texinfo updated from version 4.3 to version 4.6?

(While looking on gcc.gnu.org, I also found traces of texinfo-4.0b and
texinfo-4.0 in /scratch/root/usr/local which probably we can get rid of
now.)

Thanks,
Gerald

Chris is off-line this week -- Jeff Law, Angela and myself are
covering anything that comes up.

AFAIK Chris has used rpm's to update texinfo of late. I don't know
where you'd get an updated texinfo rpm, so unless Jeff or Angela
know, it'd be best to ping the list again in a week or so.

As suggested by Jason: Ping.

Whoops. Sorry. I somehow missed this thread.

Looks like Chris (or whomever) had to build a new RPM to install a more
up-to-date texinfo version. That looks pretty easy to do so I can do
that. However, will updating the version break anything for any of the
folks doing releases? I Cc'd a couple folks who might be affected. In
the mean time I'll start generating a new RPM.

Binutils releases won't be affected - snapshots might, but we'll fix it
if it breaks, I guess.

Looks like someone already started on this (waves at Chris) so I'll
let him finish.

Yes, I'm investigating this. I've been rather preoccupied this week
dealing with the worm attacks. I think I've probably spent more time
on this than my "real job".

In any event, I usually wait until something is available as a RawHide
release before I install it so that I end up using "standard" Red Hat
packages.

(No bonus points for any responses which make obvious points about
RawHide)

I tried grabbing a package from another web site but that trick never
works. So I guess I'll have to adapt the spec file from the rawhide
texinfo 4.5 release to 4.6.

Do we really need 4.6 or would 4.5 do? That's available via rawhide
now.

Oh, and:

Poking around in the /scratch directory isn't going to be to useful.
That contains remnants of the old sourceware system.

/usr/local/src/makeinfo has texinfo-4.0. I'm sure that can
be safely nuked.

I wasn't sure if anything relied on it but I guess it must be safe to
remove by now.

This is what I've done. There is a new version of texinfo 4.6
installed.
