Hi,

Linux-3.0.13, systemtap 6.1 and now HEAD(b6a3da4)

I've just started using systemtap to help diagnose a problem with zfsonlinux[1].
Whenever I run stap[2], the output ends with:

  Error removing module 'stap_fcac0085842418e34d8094455dc203e8_1_21605': Device or resource busy.

(obviously the module name changes) and the module is still loaded:

  # lsmod | grep stap
  stap_fcac0085842418e34d8094455dc203e8_1_21605  2896285 1027571582 [permanent]

Using "rmmod -f" on that module results in a kernel NULL pointer dereference[3].

Any suggestions about how to avoid the unloadable module?

Your dump looks like x86_64 - is this on any particular distro?  Are you
building this kernel yourself?

This is odd.  Reading kernel/module.c, the "[permanent]" should only
come about if the module has no ->exit callback.  And 1027571582 is the
field for the module refcount, which doesn't look plausible.

You must have CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD=y, or else the kernel just prints a
dummy " - -" in place of the refcount.  Though I'm not certain how lsmod
translates that, so you might check /proc/modules directly.  But it
seems like your stap modules are being built without this machinery, so
corruption ensues.  Are you sure that /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build
matches the running kernel?

This is bound to crash, even if all else is solved.  If the module exit
routines don't work, then probes may be left installed, and will
certainly die as soon as it tries to call the handler from unloaded
memory.  So don't waste any time trying to get "rmmod -f" working.

Fedora, for instance, does not enable CONFIG_MODULE_FORCE_UNLOAD at all,
because there are very few cases where this would do anything sane.

If you can boot without any of the zfs stuff, then I'd experiment with
that first, just to make sure stap is lined up with all the correct
kernel build infrastructure.  Try something simple, like one of the
syscall examples.

Yes, x86_64, on debian wheezy/sid, self-built kernel and systemtap.

That refcount is consistently odd, e.g. after a few runs:

I meant the code involved in refcounting and module exits, basically
everything guarded by #ifdef CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD in struct module.

Our exit path is more involved than just systemtap_module_exit, but it
starts with cleanup_exit as is standard for all kernel modules.  Then
the kernel's scripts/mod/modpost.c creates the struct module with .exit
= cleanup_module.  This too is guarded by #ifdef CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD.

If you run a stap example with "-p4 -k", it will leave the temporary
directory around so you can examine all the build result.  The struct
module is written into .mod.c.  It

And a clean boot as such?  Just want to make sure in case we're dealing
with corruption by zfs, that it doesn't get that chance.

If only stap was working, so we could write some scripts to track down
why stap isn't working... :/

Something else that occurs to me - in 1.6 we added code to auto-rename
modules as they are loaded to avoid conflicts.  That requires poking in
struct module, so that could be causing issues for you.  This is in the
-R option to staprun, which stap always sets unless you gave your own
module name.  So two ways you can test around this:
 - Run stap -p4 to get the module, then staprun it without -R.
 - Run stap -m NAME to assign a specific module name.

There's just the ".exit = cleanup_module" guarded in stap_test1.mod.c:

I tested the #ifdef CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD by putting garbage within the #ifdef
and manually compiling it (where the compile was per the output of "stap
-vvvvvvv"). As expected the compilation failed at the garbage, i.e.
CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD is definately defined.

Yes, fresh boot without any zfs (ditto for all subsequent tests).

Note: the othe thing about this box that might be slightly unusual is that it's
using nfs-root. Unfortunately it would be difficult to try it without that.

Hi Chris -- Sorry for my delayed reply, this fell to the back of my head
over the holidays and travel afterward.

If you're still having this issue, and willing to work on it, then I'll
whip up a script around module activity.

And if you can share your .config and which kernel tag you're building
from now, I'll try to reproduce the issue in one of my test VMs.  I
guess you're probably building with some debian patches, but I'll want
to try a vanilla kernel first.

Oh, this is probably worth mentioning: whilst the problem is
occuring on debian wheezy/sid, both the kernel and systemtap are
being built on a different machine running Ubuntu 10.04.

Those gcc are quite different -- looks like 4.4.3 vs 4.6.1/2?  Perhaps
try the "stap -p4" step from the same Ubuntu machine, with "-r DIR" to
the kernel build directory since it's sort of cross compiling.  Then
ship that over and use staprun as before.

The compiler used to create stap itself shouldn't matter much, but I
could see some ABI difference causing issues between the kernel's gcc
and that used by stap to produce its modules.  If this is the case, we
should think about ways to detect and preemptively stomp such mixing.

Yes, they're the gcc versions I'm using on the different machines.

This is it.  With that defined, jump_label.h defines HAVE_JUMP_LABEL,
which enables this part of struct module in module.h:

Compiling with/without that means everything after is shifted, including
the CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD stuff.  You can also compare this with the dump
given by dwarves pahole.

It would probably work to just turn off CONFIG_JUMP_LABEL altogether, so
it's not attempted on either compiler.  I'd be worried about other
hidden incompatibilities cropping up though.  I don't see any other
struct differences with pahole except jump_label stuff, but that doesn't
comfort me much.

So the easiest thing would be for you to compile the kernel with the
target system's own compiler, so everything matches. :)

If you keep the mismatch, we do have a couple of options to make it
easier to compile stap modules on one and run on the other.  One is the
--use-server mode, where stap running on the target will query a network
service running on the compile machine to build for it.  The other is
the --remote mode, where stap running on the compile machine will build
the module locally, then send it over ssh to run on the target and
collect the output.

I'm currently playing with enough newness, I don't think I'm
quite ready for possible "hidden incompatibilities" at this
point!

I'm currently using "stap -p4" and a manual scp to the remote
host, so --remote would be perfect, except I get:

$ stap --remote debhost -m stap_test -r ~/git/linux-build/${kv} -e 'probe begin {printf("foo\n"); exit()}'
WARNING: kernel release/architecture mismatch with host forces last-pass 4.
stap_test.ko

...and it stops at pass 4 as warned.

Oh, yeah, that pass-4 squashing is bogus when using --remote.  I just
pushed commit 19da0351 to relax that.
