Hi guys.

This must surely be the fastest fix ever.

Just downloaded and installed the bash-2.05b-5 update - which installed
gawk 3.1.1-3 - and Problem solved.

Thanks for all involved and any suggestions received..

We'll do some more testing - but first to sleep.

Kind regards

PS. And that schaap (sic) guy - with an incredible problem -
go bitch somewhere else ok!
 If goddamn signature slips in - at least be bloody civil - right!!

Good day to you too, sir...

It wasn't the signature that was bothering me - it was the format
itself. Those IncrediCrap mails are sent in some weird non-standard
HTML format, which cause Mozilla to misbehave.
Also, sending mail to mailing lists in HTML format is generally
considered impolite.

Warmest regards,

  - Michael

I completely agree! It is totally unacceptable to send messages with
animated crap in it to the list. In fact, while I'm at it I'm sick
of this corporate disclosure disclaimer bs. People, please don't
send that crap here, it's a waste of space when we get 1 line of
content and 2 pages of disclosure crap. It isn't that hard to pick
up the phone and yell at your IT personnel to cut that crap for
messages going to this list. I'd even go so far as to suggest that
messages with such content be autofiltered as spam.

Cheers,
Nicholas

I agree. If the company IT department is not cooperating, there's always
Yahoo! Mail... ;-)

Well, not to step on anyone's toes here, but I, for one, think that the
spam filter needs to be reconfigured. I tried sending the screen
announcement ( http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2002-09/msg00419.html )
SEVEN times yesterday, until it finally got through the spam filter, with
much cutting and rephrasing. Adding more rules to the spam filter will
only increase the likelihood of rejecting legitimate postings.

Out of curiousity, how many times are you going to complain about this?

With any spam blocking mechanism there will occasionally be problems.
We get a vast amount of spam and 99.9999999% of the time the spam
blocker does a good job blocking it.

Your message was blocked because you sent a large binary encoded
attachment to the list which apparently had one or two phrases in it
that marked things as spam.

Only the two you saw - once in the announcement (sorry, I was frustrated),
and the second time here (it seemed relevant).

Yes, it does, and thanks for setting it up and using it.

With all due respect, I doubt it was the attachment. That same attachment
was in the announcement that did come through. I've also tried bzipping
it, with no luck. I suspect it was something in the message text. I'm
just trying to understand what happened to prevent this from happening
again. This is probably off-topic, though, and certainly not for the
list.

I'll state it again: If you are subscribed to the mailing list you do
not get blocked. You can also subscribe to cygwin-allow to post without
getting mailing list messages sent to you.

[Now here's the place where someone has a great suggestion on how to
improve the spam software or add documentation somewhere]

Btw, you were right. It wasn't the attachment. It was the string
"make<whitespace>$" as in "make $$$" that was hitting the spam blocker.

Wow! Interesting. Lots of people use '$' as the prompt, and 'make' is
usually part of the build instructions (though often not as verbose as in
my original message)...
Interleaving the commands with text or numbering them would have fixed
this. I'll keep that in mind for the future. Sorry for the trouble.
Thanks!

The above shouldn't even compile in awk. awk isn't C or
perl, and printf() doesn't return a value (nor do you need
the semicolons).

Did you mean sprintf()?

It is usually best to use copy and paste to put your bash
session into questions of this sort.

I took your awk program and changed it to use sprintf():

  {
  one = sprintf("%s",$1);
  two = sprintf("%s",$2);
  printf("LEFT=:right=:\n",$1,$2);
  printf("left=:right=:\n",one,two);
}

Even so, your code will only ever print out

LEFT=:right=:
left=:right=:
LEFT=:right=:
left=:right=:
LEFT=:right=:
left=:right=:

with the sample file that you quote because the printf calls
don't specify "%s" anywhere.

Correcting this to:

  {
  one = sprintf("%s",$1);
  two = sprintf("%s",$2);
  printf("LEFT=: %s right=: %s\n",$1,$2);
  printf("left=: %s right=: %s\n",one,two);
}

gives this:

LEFT=: left side of record 1 right=: right side of record
left=: left side of record 1 right=: right side of record
LEFT=: left side of record 2 right=: right side of record
left=: left side of record 2 right=: right side of record
LEFT=: left side of record 3 right=: right side of record
left=: left side of record 3 right=: right side of record

as its output.

I suggest that you take a look at the gawk manual and read
the section about the BINMODE variable, which is used to
determine how gawk deals with line end conversion.

Remember that, in general, Cygwin sets up a UNIX-like file
system and file handling so the line terminator is expected
to be "\n", whereas "MSDOS"-created files have "\r\n" line
terminators. Under UNIX if you pass an MSDOS line terminated
file to gawk it will not treat "\r\n" as the terminator, but
"\n". In other words each line read will end with a "\r" and
this may cause output lines to overwrite all or part of
earlier ones.

Something like this:

$ echo -e "a b c \r" | gawk '{print NF}'
4

$

is correct behaviour because the "\r" character represents
a separate field. And notice that

$ echo -e "a b c \r" | gawk '{print $0, NF}'
 4b c

$

is correct under UNIX/Linux.

In this case the "\r" causes the OFS space and the digit 4
to overwrite the "a " of "a b c ".

By using the sed command that you mention you are using it
to remove the "\r" characters.

Note, in the above I'm assuming that you are using a full
Cygwin installation including bash. You will possibly
get different results if you run gawk from a DOS box under
Windows.

Why not? You say that "the results vary", but you dont point out
*how* they vary! As far as I can see it, its the line endings...?
So why not try an older gawk as proposed in the other thread.
Its a fact that cygwins(?) gawk behaviour changed concerning CR/LF.

Actually I didnt even get your problem. Your first post is at
least confusing. What about a clear and simple test case?
Or even better, stick to a gawk list.

bye,
 harry

You said your problem is the same with a Linux gawk, so I concluded:
"It's not specific to Cygwin".

That's where the awk experts are - not here...

Yep - that should be obvious - but not the same problem.

How you got to that great conclusion that it is not cygwin specific and
therefore offtopic here -given what I wrote - is beyond me.

Well - the previous gawk problem that I encountered in cygwin was solved
thru
this forum. How will the awk guys answer my question ie.
"is this a problem with pipes? or with gawk?".

Did you read the thread "awk CR/LF issue"? It's been a topic today.

Great! So it isn't Cygwin specific or related and therefor offtopic
here.

FYI: awk has its own newsgroup. Make sure you have read the fine
manual and the FAQ before asking there.

Hi.

Have a query/problem with gawk version 3.1.1-5 dated 17/Oct/2002.
(allthough the problem as stated is for cygwin - it can also be emulated in
Linux
with gawk 3.1.0)

Given the following example
====short awk program file==={
   one = sprintf("%s",$1);
   two = sprintf("%s",$2);
   printf("LEFT=%s:right=%s:\n",$1,$2);
   printf("left=%s:right=%s:\n",one,two);
}
===
If the input is a text file eg.
====short text file==left side of record 1 @ right side of record
left side of record 2 @ right side of record
left side of record 3 @ right side of record
===
I get different results depending on
a. How the program is started
     i. Using gawk on the input file
    ii. Using gawk after a pipe on the input file.
b. The line termination of the program file and the input file.
      i. Both files Dos terminated "CRLF"
     ii. The program file Dos terminated and the other is Unix terminated
LF"
    iii. The program file Unix terminated and the other is Dos terminated
    iv. Both files Unix terminated

a. Started as
    "gawk -F@ -f short.awk short.txt" and BOTH files are DOS terminated.
   the outputs.....
LEFT=left side of record 1 :right= right side of record:
left=left side of record 1 :right= right side of record:

b. Started as
   "tail -5 short.txt|gawk -F@  -f short.awk" and BOTH files is DOS
terminated.
   the outputs...
:EFT=left side of record 1 :right= right side of record
:eft=left side of record 1 :right= right side of record

So - the carriage return is included as part of parameter two.

The results vary - depending on the format of the two files.

Question - is this a problem with pipes? or with gawk? Am my understanding
of Cygwin in a Dos environment correct?

My current work around is to include a line like the following in the code
{sub("^M","",$2)}

Any comments or more info - please contact me.

bash, version 2.05b.0(8)
gawk version 3.1.1-5
tail (textutils) 2.0.21
on windoze 2000

Regards

Pieter Prinsloo.

[-- Attachment #1.1: Type: Text/Plain, Size: 21091 bytes --]

Hi again

first - my apologies to Joshua Daniel Franklin if i in any way affronted.
second - TX to Joshua and Dan Vasaru for the suggestions.

Attached at the end the output of running "cygcheck -s -v -r"

The problem. ( a bit long)

We are running awk scripts in a cmd console box on w2k using
gawk 3.1.1 and the needed dll's on 2 different machine with cygwin installed

As it is outside a Cygwin environment - the mount points should not
effect this.

The input files to gawk works fine and without any problems.
The problem is with the program-file.
gawk wants the program-file in unix format ie. no cr/lf termination.

eg. the following program files - tst.awk saved with notepad.
#========================
BEGIN { FS=",";
   gsub("\"","",fromevent);
   totalfound=0;
}
{
   totalfound += 1;
}
END { print "totalfound = ",totalfound;
   exit totalfound;
}
#========================
executing in a cmd console box

gawk -f tst.awk
gawk: tst.awk:1: BEGIN { FS=",";
' in expression:                ^ invalid char '

It complains about the CR in the line termination.
If however we save the file in unix format then gawk 3.1.1 works fine.
Setting the CYGWIN environment variable in the command script has no effect.
This was never a problem with gawk 3.0.4

BUT....................

Running the above on 2 other machines in the shop with similiar configs and
where cygwin is not and never was installed
The problem does NOT occur. ie. gawk 3.1.1 behaves as expected and takes
program-files in either dos or unix format.

My questions.
- Is this by design or are we missing something.
- Seeing it is not a problem where cygwin was not installed
     is a system dll or registry entry perhaps involved? Maybe the
environment?
- Any suggestions on where to look? what to look for?
- As we do not beforehand know the config of system where this will
   be installed - we will be having hassles with the QA of all the
program-files

Tx and kind regards
Pieter Prinsloo
