Quick search on find_fast_cwd leads here...

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/22821467/cygwin-win-8-1-error-find-fast-cwd-warning-couldnt-compute-fast-cwd-pointer

When was the last time you updated Cygwin? What version of Windows are you
running? What version of Cygwin? More details would be helpful...

Perhaps the embedded message could now reference the FAQ entry, although most
posts contain the original message from years ago, which could possibly be
auto-replied to by sourceware?

I saw these error messages when I first used Cygwin after upgrading to
Windows 8.1. Upgrading to the latest and greatest Cygwin solved the
problem.

Help us to help you. You've given us *exceptionally* little information
to work out what the problem is here. See the below link, and the

Alternatively, if somebody finds out *what* introduces this problem, so
I can try to install this as well to reproduce the problem, I'd be
grateful as well.

Sorry, but I can't reproduce this. I've tested on a fully updated 2008
64 bit machine, with Cygwin 1.7.28, in 32 and 64 bit, and there's no
such message for me.

This is one of those problems which gets apparently introduced by some
hotfix which is not part of the normal update procedure, and I can't
change this code unless I can reproduce the problem.

If somebody can reproduce this on the existing Windows versions, and
this somebody feels not too repelled by plunging into assembler
debugging ntdll.dll, mainly the function RtlGetCurrentDirectory_U and
a subsequently called noname function, and compares what happens with
the Cygwin function find_fast_cwd_pointer() in path.cc, please feel
free to submit patches.

Btw., what OS version *exactly* are you encountering this problem?
Please send the output of `cygcheck -svr' as requested in
http://cygwin.com/problems.html.

I'm getting the same error (warning) on Windows 2008 and I still didn't find
a way to avoid it. I'm sure I'm using the last version of Cygwin64. Maybe I
should use an older version? Same install is working perfectly on Windows
2003 and Windows 7.

Thanks.

Are you using an older Cygwin version by any chance? I'm using Windows
8.1 daily and I haven't seen this message for a long time. The patch to
avoid the message is from when 8.1 has gone Beta, as far as I remember.

Under Win8.1, cygwin64 reports:

       1 [main] scp 4648 find_fast_cwd: WARNING: Couldn't compute
FAST_CWD pointer.

and asks for this to be reported.

Yep, I noticed afterwards. Bad threading on the part of my email client
caused me to jump the gun. Sorry for the noise.

Larry,
I submitted a later post where I found that the problem occurs when
the VM networking mode is NAT. Okay with bridged. I've submitted a
support request to VMware. John.

Have you talked to the VMWare folks about this? It does seem like an
odd issue that only affects name resolution on VMware with Win7.

I have cygwin installed on a VMWare VM running Windows 7 on a Mac
running OSX 10.6. I am unable to get name resolution to work with ssh.
The command ssh X returns the error "ssh: could not resolve hostname X:
Non-recoverable failure in name resolution." The command nslookup X
returns a valid IP address. I found the link below, and several others
that reference the problem, but no solution. Is there a solution to
this problem?

http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2010-02/msg00230.html

I do not have this problem with machines running XP either on VMs or
natively. I've created a partial workaround in my .bashrc file that
creates variables containing the IP addresses of the names I need to
resolve. This solution doesn't work with svn working copies if the
repository has a dynamic address because the IP address of the
repository at checkout will be coded in the .svn/entries file. If the
IP address of the svn server changes I'm won't be able to perform svn
operations.

Please read and follow carefully the problem reporting guidelines
found here:

Pay particular attention to the request to *attach*, rather than in-line,
the 'cygcheck' output.

After downloading and installing every component of the
setup.exe file for using cygwin, when I open cygwin and try
compiling a program that i have created, using the command
"gcc -o <filename> <filename>.c", the command "gcc" is not
recognized and I cannot compile my program. What should I do??

Thank you

Well, one could, but that would be the long way around most likely.
However, as Igor suggested, it makes sense to limit advice until we get
the information requested at <http://cygwin.com/problems.html>.

You probably have to install Cygwin for "All Users", instead of "Just Me".

In Cygwin bash, the current directory is not normally searched for
executables.

Try ./file_to_execute to see if that works.

If it doesn't, please show us what you actually typed in and exactly what
you got back.

Hi

I have downloaded, installed and configured cygwin onto my windows
machine. I can run a test program "hello world!" successfully but when I
try to run an other c program an error message bash-2.04:not found is
returned. Have you any suggestions on what the problem may be?
