Hi,
following a unpleasant discussion about cygwin usability
https://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2018-04/msg00364.html
I wondered how many users cygwin have.
I decided to look at cygwin web server statistics for setup
download to have some basic data.
The web server log are stored for 12 weeks and I see that the number of
download per week of setup-x86_64.exe are relative stable.
cygwin-combined_log-20180204.gz 94749
cygwin-combined_log-20180211.gz 92740
cygwin-combined_log-20180218.gz 82597
cygwin-combined_log-20180225.gz 92420
cygwin-combined_log-20180304.gz 101957
cygwin-combined_log-20180311.gz 98670
cygwin-combined_log-20180318.gz 97539
cygwin-combined_log-20180325.gz 98178
cygwin-combined_log-20180401.gz 96515
cygwin-combined_log-20180408.gz 90326
cygwin-combined_log-20180415.gz 95458
cygwin-combined_log-20180422.gz 92738
with an average 94490 download per week.
For the 32bit version the number instead are
around a quarter of the 64bit one.
cygwin-combined_log-20180204.gz 23567
cygwin-combined_log-20180211.gz 31473
cygwin-combined_log-20180218.gz 35067
cygwin-combined_log-20180225.gz 27618
cygwin-combined_log-20180304.gz 26236
cygwin-combined_log-20180311.gz 31383
cygwin-combined_log-20180318.gz 27372
cygwin-combined_log-20180325.gz 23872
cygwin-combined_log-20180401.gz 20486
cygwin-combined_log-20180408.gz 21647
cygwin-combined_log-20180415.gz 21793
cygwin-combined_log-20180422.gz 21563
with an average 26006 download per week.
So in total we have around 120 K download per week
of the two setup exe's
As curiosity the raw data of x86 download were
very high in February due to a single
Windows 98 in Japan that was downloading 201122
times in a week the setup-x86.exe
Regards
Marco

Cygwin is essential to my productivity and work flow on Windows.
I seldom use X on Cygwin but it usually performs well when I do.
Others' mileage may vary.

Younger people seem to prefer MSYS due to its use of pacman.
Admittedly, it is very convenient. Otherwise Cygwin (or MSYS) has
always been accepted (at least amongst everyone I talk to) as a
necessity.
Even if the updates aren't automatic due to the DLL issue, a CLI
interface to the updater would help.

the setup is usable as CLI.
Can be improved, but it is usable for most of the stuff.
PS: Post bottom is fine, but also trim is needed.

Someone should point those folks to ancient circas at:
http://www.crouchingtigerhiddenfruitbat.org/
or suggest they revert to DJGPP.

As second statistics, where are cygwin users,
I took the 64bit data of a Febrary week
and crossed the data with geoiplookup.
The result are:

(with apologies for replying to such an old thread; I've been trying
to do some email catchup)
I have often wondered why apt-cyg [1] hasn't been adopted fully by
Cygwin as one of the default packages (in fact I'm not sure if there
even is an actual cygwin package for apt-cyg), aside from the fact
that it's not formally maintained as part of the cygwin ecosystem.
Maybe it should be.
Although the old setup.exe has its uses, and isn't too bad when you
use the command-line flags either, almost always whenever I make a new
cygwin install, unless I know immediately what packages I'm going to
need, I usually just install the bare minimum I need to get apt-cyg
working (usually wget, plus a few other core utilities), and then use
apt-cyg from thereon out. In my experience it works really well, and
is just as good as having pacman or whatever.

YES PLEASE! Cygwin is awesome and this would put it firmly into the
first class of required windows programs/systems.

If somebody is willing to maintain apt-get as package in the Cygwin
distro, which includes keeping it running if setup.exe changes, fixing
bugs as required(*), by all means, go ahead.
Are you volunteering, by any chance?

My reply was only meant as a hint, I have no interest in the package,
but someone (who is on this list I believe) already did:

No, actually, it's not nice at all. See https://github.com/transcode-open/apt-cyg/issues/73 and read down to alphapapa's comment. A little googling will show the comment is accurate.

For starters, apt-cyg and the handful of purported alternatives will
break your installation in subtle and not-so subtle ways. None of them
handle all postinstall actions correctly and all of them will fall over
if locked in-use files have to be altered or replaced.

I'm sure it has bugs, though it's always worked quite well for me. If I
have experienced those bugs I'm not sure. I think it's possible but I'm
also expert enough to usually resolve issues I've encountered on my own. At
the most, I think I've had to occasionally run rebaseall after some package
installs.
I didn't realize its development history was such a hideous mess,
especially considering that it's just a few hundred lines of bash script
that I could probably rewrite myself. Personally I'd be happy to maintain
it, especially if it were installed with Cygwin. Otherwise I'd just be
maintaining yet another "unofficial" fork of it.
Personally, I don't think a GUI program should be the only interface for
installing new packages into cygwin*

Bring Out Yer Dead!
What about package managers that don't interact with cygwin setup? Why
not build `apt-get` et. al. to install to /opt/? Yes I know it would be
a system within a system within a system, but it might be worth a shot.
This, especially if the "cygwin setup" package manager isn't open
source (I thought everything cygwin was, but I guess not).

The project even has a homepage, albeit a vestigial one:
