Hi,  
 
I want to see working ecos on at91sam9263ek board.  
As far as I know, there is no freely available source code of ecos port on  
this hardware, am I right? (I know about ecoscentric, but it is not  
freely available).  
 
May be anybody is working on such kind of port?  
 
Right now I'm reading docs about cdl language, and stuck on which
variant to choose: create directory at91sam9 in  
packages/hal/arm/arm9 and write hal package from scratch  
or use packages/hal/arm/at91 stuff, at91sam9263ek is very similar  
to at91sam7s, but  
packages/hal/arm/at91/var/current/cdl/hal_arm_at91.cdl  
contain things like "implements CYGINT_HAL_ARM_ARCH_ARM7",  
may be someone, who has more experience than I (i.e. > 0) with ecos  
configuration framework, could suggest which solution to choose?

Here is patch for initial support of atmel at91sam9263ek
against current cvs tree.

Using this patch it is possible to get redboot console
on dbgu port if you load it into memory via sam-ba or jtag.

Any comments about this patch?

The next step I think will be implement booting from flash
memory.
But at91sam9263k board has limitations for
the "the first level" application, it size should be < 72K,
or it should consists of several parts when one load another.

So how do you think is it possible to build redboot with
nand,nor and serial usb support and image size less
then 72K? Another option may be usage of
"the first level" bootloader from atmel(at91bootstrap),
but this solution has its own disadvantages.

I don't undesntand you, you need only apply patch, and that's all,
no need copy something somewhere, just apply patch, run configtool
choose template, hardware at91sam9263ek, package redboot,
and build.

 In your patch seems to miss the files mlt_arm_at91sam9263ek_rom.h and
mlt_arm_at91sam9263ek_rom.ldi. So I obtain an error if I try to start
"RedBoot" from ROM. Can you complete your patch? I consider it very useful.

Address in dataflash depends on how you build at91bootstrap,
there is configuration file, I don't remember exactly, like
board/at91sam9263ek/dataflash/at91sam9263ek.h
where you point address and size in dataflash,
and address in sdram where put what it load in dataflash.
sdram address should be 0x23f00000

Also check that your config's setting is right:
- communication channel be DBGU and should be only one
- main oscillator frequency should be 16 and something Mhz don't
  remember details, look at board's documentation, divider and
  multiplier should be the same as at91boostrap set
- redboot should not expect that vectors (pointers  to services, like
  print to console and so on) are initialized, option name is like "work with
  redboot"

SAM-BA seem to be 0x8000. In fact, if I use the same at91bootloader with
uboot with this address, uboot starts correctly. If I use patched redboot
for at91sam9263ek, redboot doesn't start and I only see "RomBoot>" shell. I
used exactly your patch, apply on ecos-cvs, and the only thing I do, is to
set RAM as default value of CYG_HAL_STARTUP in
packages/hal/arm/at91/at91sam9/current/cdl/hal_arm_at91sam9.cdl. I
downloaded redboot on my board with SAM-BA using DataFlash section with
0x8000 destination address. I don't understand why redboot doesn't start on
my board.

I see three possible reasons:
1)at91bootstrap doesn't start it (almost impossible, as you say)
2)redboot fails on early stage (only jtag can help)
3)wrong configuration, like main osilator frequnce, multiplier, divider and so on

you can debug it via jtag, or wait the next version of patch,
where I will fix several bugs.

I don't think it's that similar. At least, it seems similar at a
high-level, but differs in most of the details once you get into it. The
register layouts differ in many places between the SAM9 variants even. I
think you'd end up with huge amounts of ifdefs.

I recommend the former approach. If there is anything that can sensibly be
shared, perhaps it could be broken out into a separate package.

No need for that. If it's SAM9 then CYGPKG_HAL_ARM_ARM9 will have been
brought into the configuration courtesy of the ecos.db target template.

Can you, please, give, example of such defence?
I compared  at91sam7s and at91sam9263ek datasheets, the base addresses
on which IP blocks are mapped sometimes different,
but layouts of the registers the same, here what I compare:

- gpio controller
- DBGU controller
- TC 
- PMC
- AIC
- WatchDog
- Reset controller
- PIT

Only In PMC there is additional register for plla, instead of
reserved place in sam7's pmc. All other register have the same offset
and names on both boards.
Was I missed something?

you mean split hal on several packages?
like package for work with gpio,
for reset cpu and so on?

Well I had flicked through our own SAM926x implementation to see the 
variations, and there was differences for most of the base addresses as 
you saw, the bus matrix, the EBI, pin mappings, peripheral assignments, 
USB and PLLs.

Just to be clear, I was talking about cloning, rather than really starting 
from scratch, but I'm sure that's what you were considering.

I meant have a common package for the bits which are indeed common.

The reason is that I think it would be bad for the AT91 HAL to be a big 
mess of #ifdefs for all the different variants all the way through. It's 
getting that way already. eCos is meant to be modular, rather than having 
large monolithic headers with the kitchen sink thrown in. It becomes 
difficult to work out exactly what does apply where.

I guess alternatively, if it were in a single package, then it would be 
better to break it into different files, and only the correct files are 
used according to the configuration. A bit like the SH3 or SH4 HALs (I 
suggest looking at those to see what I mean). Those had to deal with the 
same sorts of problems - peripherals in various implementations combined 
in different ways.

IMHO.

For example, consider the cache and MMU stuff. That really shouldn't 
belong in the AT91 HAL. At least not the existing form of AT91 HAL. At the 
very least you can't have hal_cache.h and var_io.h in both the ARM9 HAL 
and the AT91 HAL, so _something_ will have to be majorly reorganised.
