Ok, I give up.

I configured and installed the following in order:

binutils
gcc (all-gcc, all-target-libgcc)
newlib

everything's living in install/ and yet I get:

tor:~/bld/bfin/install/bin$ ./bfin-elf-gcc a.c -w
bfin-elf-gcc: error: no processor type specified for linking
bfin-elf-gcc: fatal error: error in arguments to spec function
‘pass-through-libs’
compilation terminated.

so yeah...set me up with an environment to connect to. I'm a wuss :-).
