            Bug ID: 29931
           Summary: Comments should not respect line continuation
           Product: gdb
           Version: 12.1
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: gdb
          Assignee: unassigned at sourceware dot org
          Reporter: development at efficientek dot com
  Target Milestone: ---

The following script does nothing (in 12.1), but I think most end-users would
find this unexpected (as do I).

# === begin ===

# with set width 0 -- \
printf "This does not execute"

# === end ===

Its expected that nothing in the line of a comment can affect the running of
the script. Respecting line continuations violates this. This is unlike bash,
sh, and python scripts, which also use '#' as comments and which do not respect
line continuations in comments.

Like make, which does respect line continuation in comments.

I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for bringing it up. So perhaps this is more a
feature request than a bug. Open to discussion as to whether this is desirable.
I just got bit by it and was confounded as to why some lines of my gdb script
were not executing.

Is there a good reason to have this "feature"? Was this feature intentional?
What are people's gut feelings on whether this is what most users would expect?

--- Comment #3 from Glenn Washburn <development at efficientek dot com> ---
Also, I'd like to add that some terminal text editors don't/can't show the
whole line on the screen. So in this case, if one wants to comment a line, one
must also move the cursor to the end of the line to see whether there is a
continuation or not. This extra check may be forgotten when GDB is not used
regularly and cause extra headaches.
