I realized that starting around this time all my filter for
mailing lists (that had been working for years) broke. :-(

What happened?

The pattern I have been matching for is

 ^Sender: .*gcc(-announce|-patches|-cvs-wwwdocs)?-bounces@gcc.gnu.org

The mails coming in since than have

 Sender: "Gcc-patches" <gcc-patches-bounces+gerald=pfeifer.com@gcc.gnu.org>

Is this a permanent change?

If so, how do we inform users of this? What do we recommend going
forward?

Gerald

Hi -

We're experimenting with VERP for outgoing traffic from mailman.

Right.

Not sure. It seems to make email more traceable and MAYBE a little
faster to deliver to good receivers, so from that PoV it's nice.

Hm, I added a brief blurb here, but it's not exactly a well known
place. I probably wouldn't want to spam every user with an update
about it either tho. What do you think we should do?

Ah, makes sense. I wasn't explicitly aware of VERP before, yet
looking at the header it is pretty obvious what this was about. ;-)

So users need to be careful adjusting their filter rules, as not to
change now and then have to change back again?

Somewhat independent of the current experiment with VERP, I think it
would be great to advise users how to go about filtering e-mails (i.e.,
which headers to filter on and other potential considerations).

Could you send a brief heads-up to gcc@gcc.gnu.org hinting at some
improvements being tested and how to adjust/configure filters that
will work now _and_ in the future?

I volunteer myself to update our list related web page accordingly.

Thanks,
Gerald
