Bug ID: 31098
Summary: Typo-squatted Core Toolchain Infrastructure domain
names pointing at Sourcware?
Product: sourceware
Version: unspecified
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: Infrastructure
Assignee: overseers at sourceware dot org
Reporter: carlos at redhat dot com
Target Milestone: ---
The Core Toolchain Infrastructure project at the Linux Foundation discovered
that there was a typo-squatted domain name for a CTI project domain that was
pointing at Sourceware.
I have filed this issue to check with all overseers to see if the domains were
registered to protect the associated projects from typo-squatting.
In particular CTI has registered "toolchains.dev", but "toolchain.dev" (without
the 's') is privately registered and points at sourceware.org (the reason I'm
filling this bug).
For a variety of reasons we have registered and will be using
"coretoolchain.dev" for the current TAC documentation work.
I wanted to check in here to make sure that someone wasn't paying to protect a
domain that we won't be using.
Lastly, in the CTI TAC meeting today (2023-11-29) I checked with Ian Kelling
(FSF) and he says that the FSF does not hide their domain ownership and that he
isn't aware of any additional domain purchases related to CTI.

Heay ancient history. You might have forgotten that we originally registered
gnu.toolchain.dev for the GNU Tools Assembly but we ended up using the
gnu.tools domain for that. Then when we started the GNU Toolchain
Infrastructure discussions a couple of years back we repurposed it to point at
sourceware.org.

Thanks for the context Mark!
Yes, the GNU Assembly is currently using gnu.tools.
I had forgotten that "gnu.toolchain.dev" was registered for that use too e.g.
GNU Assembly.
For this particular issue I wanted to make sure that nobody was paying for a
domain that they didn't want and that they thought would be useful to prevent
typo-squatting.
