* suggest adding posting dates to follows-up and references

FWIW, here's a change that I would find beneficial:

At the bottom of a post, which is either a reply and/or has a follow-up,
we see something like the following example:

 • Follow-Ups:
      ◦ Re: Hangs on connect to UNIX socket being listened on in the same process (was: Cygwin hanging in pselect)
           ◾ From: Erik Bray

 • References:
      ◦ Re: Hangs on connect to UNIX socket being listened on in the same process (was: Cygwin hanging in pselect)
           ◾ From: Erik Bray

I would find it helpful to follow the users’ names with the date of the
posting. This would be especially useful when there is a long list of
either follows-up or references to help find the one being sought.
For example:

       ◾ From: Erik Bray, Mon, 9 Jan 2017 14:29:00 +0100

I'm guessing that you are using a webmail interface. Such text is NOT
part of the email body being sent, but is rather it is added by your
webmail provider interpreting the <In-Reply-To> headers present on the
message. Other mail clients have their own way of showing threads. But
your request is not something the Cygwin list can change, but rather a
feature you'd have to request from your webmail provider (or that you
can change by downloading your emails and reading them with a local
client like thunderbird or mutt).

No, I'm not using webmail. I am using browser to read postings directly
from http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin. (I copied from the web page,
then pasted and did a bit of editing to get the bullets to render
somewhat before posting. Maybe that gave the appearance of what
webmail might do.)

Ah. Well, posting a URL of a page in question would have helped. Let's
see; here's one :)

https://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2017-02/msg00271.html

Well, according to the bottom of
https://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2017-02/index.html, the Cygwin mailing list
archives are run by MHonArc software, so it would be a feature request
to MHonArc (https://www.mhonarc.org/) followed by getting the sourceware
webmaster to upgrade to the newer mhonarc version so that all sourceware
list archives (including cygwin) would benefit from that new feature.
Again, not something that cygwin is directly responsible for, as long as
MHonArc doesn't yet support it.

Sorry for leading you astray on the web page, and thank you for drawing my
attention to the MHonArc converter software. Now, I don't know anything
about this software, but looking at
https://www.mhonarc.org/MHonArc/doc/resources/foluplitxt.html, it looks
to me as though MHonArc already supports what I was suggesting with the
$MSGLOCALDATE$ option. Sourceware is simply taking a default setting.

I think the change would be from the default:

<li><strong>$SUBJECT$</strong>
<ul><li><em>From:</em> $FROM$</li></ul></li>

to:

<li><strong>$SUBJECT$</strong>
<ul><li><em>From:</em> $FROM$, $MSGLOCALDATE$</li></ul></li>

Not saying that it's going to get done, but it doesn't appear to be quite
the effort that you described.

Still, you'll need to forward this request to webmaster AT sourceware
DOT org, as the cygwin list readers are not the same people as those in
charge of maintaining the web pages. (see
https://sourceware.org/lists.html for the full set of archives that will
be impacted by making such a change)

Who am I that they would listen to me? The request would certainly have to
come from someone with an existing relationship to them, like some person
of authority within Cygwin. Again, this was all just a suggestion in case
someone agrees and cares to run with it. I've made my suggestion and will
be happy to let this thread die.

It's a reasonable suggestion, and there's no harm in politely asking for
it. You can include a link to this thread so they can see whether the
community wants the change.

I'm in agreement, and if it needs a vote, count me in favor of adding
the date/time stamp to the archive display as suggested.

Might want to qualify that to adding the date time stamp to the
Thread Index headings, as I assume that is what you mean, although
it is not stated anywhere, as the other indices and the articles
have date time stamps.

Providing examples of other similar lists showing date time stamps
might help.
