But the weird conversion suggests packing { 0, 1, 0, 1 } as
{ 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, ... }
thus expanding each bit to 8 bits.  So it's rather an unpacking :/
As said, the scalar conversion does not make any sense...

But maybe I'm missing something very obvious?
