Hi gnu.org admins, can you set up an SPF record for gcc.gnu.org? I
think that may reduce some cases where e-mail from gcc.gnu.org is
getting incorrectly marked as spam. All e-mail from addresses
@gcc.gnu.org should come from gcc.gnu.org itself. Therefore, I believe
the correct SPF record should be

v=spf1 a ~all

If gnu.org runs bind, then the right entry in the zone file would be

gcc.gnu.org. IN TXT "v=spf1 a ~all"

Thanks!

Ian

Are you sure of this? I think I'm seeing people using
@gcc.gnu.org addresses when posting to mailing lists (cf.
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2011-02/msg00395.html ).

Good point. And since many of those people don't have shell access on
the machine, it's not like they could easily send the mail from there.

So the SPF record for gcc.gnu.org should be:

 gcc.gnu.org. TXT "v=spf1 a ?all"

If you agree, I'll go ahead and make the change.

OK, let's do that. Thanks.

I actually think it is very unwise for people to send e-mail using
addresses @gcc.gnu.org. gcc.gnu.org hosts software development
projects, and is absolutely not intended to serve as an e-mail
forwarding address. However, I suppose we shouldn't break people doing
that without any notice.

Ian

Ok, done.

But then, why do we give @gcc.gnu.org aliases to all maintainers? I don't use mine these days, but I've always assumed it
was ok to use it for anything related to GCC development.

We give out accounts so that people can check stuff in and receive
notifications from the system. It isn't intended to be a free email
forwarding service even though it seems that many people think it
is.
