Maybe simplify to use dynamic_cast for the returned value, e.g.

   TDepType *tdep = dynamic_cast<TDepType *> (gdbarch_tdep_1 (gdbarch));
   gdb_assert(tdep != nullptr);
   return (tdep);
}
