There is already the 'wreck-type' unit property.

It does. The default wrecked type for any sort of wreckage is still
'wreck-type', both in the case where there the default value is found in
a special wreckage table, and in the case where there is no special
wreckage table.
I believe I mention this in the documentation and/or announcement of the
the special wreckage tables.

Yes, the code should already do that, and I made the behavior that way
for precisely this reason.
