Hi GDB maintainers

Just wondering if this is down for you as well

https://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/mailing-lists/

I clicked "bug-gdb"

This site can’t be reached mail.gnu.org refused to connect.
Try:

Checking the connection
Checking the proxy and the firewall
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED

I was going to ask if gdb@sourceware.org could be added to the $ gdb --help output and also the man page?
Also this page

https://sourceware.org/gdb/onlinedocs/gdb/

BTW, the footer has a link "Previous: (dir)" and "Up: (dir)" is a broken link to
https://sourceware.org/gdb/onlinedocs/dir/index.html

Could someone fix that link, or should I file a bug report on sourceware?

Regards, Jonny

Maybe it was temporary, the GNU mailing list page works for me right now.

However, there has been no activity there for many years, I think we should
either remove it from our page, or at least mention that it's there for
archive purposes only.

Yes, I think it would be nice. Would you mind providing patches for that?

> Also this page

This is generated from the gdb.texinfo file in the GDB source code, so you
could provide a patch for this as well:

https://sourceware.org/git/?p=binutils-gdb.git;a=blob;f=gdb/doc/gdb.texinfo;h=641816284954a492d6079560b9e6ab8312efa159;hb=HEAD

You can generate the HTML manual using the "make html" command in the gdb/doc
build directory.

Hmm, we would have to find out if it's a texinfo bug, or just us using texinfo wrong.

Again, you can generate this file using the "make html" command mentioned above and
try to find out why.

Unfortunately it is still down for me from laptop and android mobile.

Sounds reasonable. I didn't receive a reply from the gnu webmasters, maybe they are overloaded with lockdown.

I've attached a patch for the 'gdb --help' output

Could the scripts that need 'html' command make a suggestion to install texinfo html convertor package 'texi2html' ?

Otherwise it's this error:

html  -I . ./annotate.texinfo
/bin/bash: html: command not found

Yes, it is the same in the html created.
I've attached a patch that removes those broken links.

Cheers, Jonny

My apologies, correct version of the patch attached.

Thanks, these changes are fine with me in principle, but the
indentations seems to be wrong here:

>    if (REPORT_BUGS_TO[0] && stream == gdb_stdout)
>      fprintf_unfiltered (stream, _("\

>  "), REPORT_BUGS_TO);

Is the added fprintf conditioned by this 'if':

  if (REPORT_BUGS_TO[0] && stream == gdb_stdout)

If it is, then braces are missing around the two fprintf's; if it
isn't, then the second fprintf should not be indented as the first
one.

What was wrong with the previous version, and why this one is better?
I'm probably missing something, but it sounds to me like an explicit
'mailto:' is better?

Hello Eli
My apologies, the first version didn't compile as you mentioned in your other email.

Other shell tools with such URLs or email addresses are using <> without the mailto:, eg make --help

Report bugs to <bug-make@gnu.org>

gdb --help currently has extra quotes:-

Report bugs to "<http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/bugs/>".

I had kept the same style with the quotes. Would it actually be better to remove the quotes so it matches other tools
like strings --help etc?

So it would then look like:

Report bugs to <http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/bugs/>.
GDB mailing list <gdb@sourceware.org>

Thanks, Jonny

Hello
For me this mailing archive is still offline. http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-gdb

It's linked from this page: https://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/mailing-lists/

Maybe the link should be removed?

Cheers, Jonny

I tried every link to the archives, and they all worked for me.
I thinking maybe you have the older version in your browser's cache?

All of them? mail.gnu.org doesn't respond to http. The correct host
would be lists.gnu.org.

Hello Joel
I'm in the UK. Checked with two different ISPs, mobile and desktop PC. Even two browsers, incognito
So if you click here on this link in this email http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-gdb does it work for you?

On the GDB page, it is the final link "(mail relay bug-gdb) is the public GDB news group."

Cheers, Jonny

Hi Andreas

I wonder if this HTML could be updated then? Do you know who maintains the gdb web page?

<dd> (mail
relay <a href="http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-gdb/"
name="bug-gdb"> <b>bug-gdb</b></a>) is the public GDB news group.</dd>

As you say, if I use https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-gdb it does work!

W3C have an online link checker, https://validator.w3.org/checklink it also finds the error

error Line: 118 http://mail.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-gdb/
Status: 500 Can't connect to mail.gnu.org:80 (Connection refused)
This is a server side problem. Check the URI.

Cheers, Jonny

I was checking the links to what I believe to be mailing list archives.
I excluded the newsgroup in my check.

I see. Thanks for clarifying.

I found this URL:

    https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gdb/

But looking at it, the most recent post appears to be from Dec 2017.
Is that the correct link? Is that newsgroup still active?

Wasn't bug-gdb@gnu.org converted to a gdb@sourceware.org alias years ago?

https://sourceware.org/legacy-ml/gdb/2014-11/msg00023.html

Here,

 https://sourceware.org/legacy-ml/gdb/2014-12/msg00001.html

I'm surprised the archives even exist beyond 2014.

For example, here:

 https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gdb/2016-01/threads.html

we see an email:

 https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gdb/2016-01/msg00000.html

that I can't find on the gdb@sourceware.org archive:

 https://sourceware.org/legacy-ml/gdb/2016-01/

Did the redirect stop working or something?

I just did an experiment, and sent an email to bug-gdb, and got
an email back from gdb-owner that it is being held in quarantine
waiting for and admin to approve it. So I think the redirection
is working, but now the mailing-list settings don't let those through
without moderator approval.

I was wondering how active the newsgroup might be. One can take
a look there:

    https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/gnu.gdb.bug

To sumarize:
  - One post in 2019, with a question and no replies;
  - Nothing in 2018;
  - A stream of spam in 2017;
  - Two posts in 2016, with no answers;
  - Nothing in 2015;
  - More activity in 2014.

I'm wondering if we shouldn't just ask gnu.org to shut gnu.gdb.bug down.
Then we can adapt the mailinglist page on the GDB website accordingly,
with a link to the old archives for reference (as long as they are live).

Any opinion on gnu.gdb.bug?

Sounds reasonable.

I would suggest to update the bug-gdb link to the correct server at least for the moment. https://sourceware.org/gdb/mailing-lists/ What do you think?
I don't know who has access to the web page. I can submit a patch if that would be supported.

Probably better to just link to the archive, and clarify it is an old archive
"archive of old bug-gdb mailing list"

Note, this link is the archive, not the listinfo (so as not to encourage anyone to post to it, or try and join)
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gdb

Cheers, Jonny
